Compete to reconstruct the city of Lisboa after the great earthquake of 1755.

1-4 Players  |  60-120 Mins  |  Ages 12+

Description:

Lisboa is thus played, in part, on a representational map of the city. During the planning of the downtown re-building project, the type of businesses permitted in each street was pre-determined. The clockmakers and goldsmiths had their street; as did the bookstores and libraries; the tailors and silk vendors; and the toolmakers as well. This all comes into play on the Lisboa gameboard.

Players represent the nobility of Lisboa who will use their influence in the reconstruction and business development of the new city.

In rebuilding the city, players will make use of the Royal Builder, who works with the architects to build Lisboa anew, while the Marquis will provide aid in the development of commerce. The King will provide players with political help in re-opening the beautiful new city. But the true reason you are rebuilding the city is not for greatness, or even fame or fortune. As a nobleman or noblewoman of Lisboa, your primary motivation is the acquisition of Wigs--a most important trading commodity of the Era, and the means of scoring points in the game.

Personal Review and Recommendation

This game is so good we are making the ultimate upgrade for it. We are handcrafting the entire city of Lisboa for you to build.

First of, the games complexity is fairly high. It's a game that will appeal to those that love strong strategy. The artwork and component quality is top notch, with the renowned Ian O'Toole at the helm you'll love all the detail and art work in this game with it's unique art style. Photos do not do it justice, having the board out on the table you'll notice the amount of effort that has been placed into this game art and in particular feel it provides. Sophistication meets elegant architecture in this political building game. There is plenty of depth on strategies and gameplay, dual use cards, many paths to victory and lots of player interaction as you limit the choices of your opponents. A game that if I have the time, I'd never refuse to play if offered. It can be a bit cut throat but after all it's high stakes and you are tyring to be the best architect pleasing the nobles whilst re-building a city of rubble and ruins.

Whenever I'm playing a game, I'm always analysing from a component level is there room for improvement? What can take this to the next level?

The first thing I was onto was upgrading my coins to Moedas & Co. For this one I feel it's an absolute must, you need to have reais metal coins. The cardboard configuration just doesn't do it justice.

The second upgrade we decided needed to be buildings. I knew this was going to be a massive project. Attention to detail must match the original designer's intent, and art work from Ian O'Toole. We felt when we placed out the public buildings, the artwork was somewhat lost on the tile, and players on the other end of the table couldn't see it at all what they were building. It needed to rise from the table and stand out. The only answer was to come up with a full city, a building for each public tile, and a set of store buildings for the middle of the board. We needed to still be able to use player colours and pieces from the player's board, whilst trying to adhere to a similar scale throughout. We can't wait for this project to finish and I'm hoping it will be done before I get this game back onto the table.

One of my favourite games, I'd rate this game at 8.4 / 10.
