Clans of Caledonia: Industria is the game’s first expansion that plunges deeper into the Industrial Revolution, transforming Scotland’s landscape and economy.
This listing is for Clans of Caledonia base game with Industria Expansion in the 1 Big Box (Industria).
Elevate your game with Industria:
- Big Box & Inserts: A large box with custom inserts and removable trays for easy organization and swift setup of both the base game and the expansion.
- Six New Gameplay Modules: Introducing fresh challenges and strategic opportunities.
- Endless Variety: Customize your gaming experience with five modular “more of what you love” expansions, offering endless replayability.
- New Train Map: Explore new strategies, build impressive industrial empires, and dominate the Scottish landscape on the new train map.
Industria is the perfect addition for fans of the base game and newcomers alike.
Clans of Caledonia is an award-winning mid-to-heavy economic strategy board game set in 19th-century Scotland, a period of transformation from rural farming to bustling industry and global trade. Players lead historic Scottish clans, each with unique abilities, competing to produce, trade, and export valuable goods—including Scotland’s iconic whisky. The game features a dynamic market where prices shift with supply and demand, offering rich player interaction and strategic choices that immerse you in Scotland’s early Industrial Revolution.
Game Play Modules
Mix & match all 11 modules!
- Ride Scotland’s new rail network on the new train map with 24 unique delivery bonuses.
- Use the railroads to deliver goods to Scottish towns, earning unique bonuses.
- 16 milestones: Race to claim the best milestones to unlock new train routes and earn the most glory.
- Contract refill board: Plan ahead by considering the upcoming 8 export contracts.
- 9 award tiles: Score in new ways with end-game awards.
- 9 farmers market tiles: Sell goods to the lucrative farmers market when you expand on a neighboring hex.
- 45 automa cards: Challenge yourself against the newly-designed automa opponent with any combination of expansion modules.
- 9 new clans inspired by technologies from the Industrial Revolution such as the locomotive, threshing machine, cotton mill, and more.
- 9 new end-of-round scoring tiles for infinite replayability.
- 9 new port tiles that promote completely new opening strategies.
- 9 starting tiles with more variety.
- 4 new double-sided map modules, featuring special waterfall hexes. There are now 256 different map configurations—16 times as many as in the base game.
Double the Fun
These 5 modules effectively double the content of the base game, bringing the total to 18 clans, 18 scoring tiles, 18 port tiles, 18 starting tiles, and 8 double-sided map modules.
Replayability
The base game already offered substantial replayability, but the Industria expansion elevates it even further.
- Diverse Strategies: New scoring methods—like awards, milestones, and train deliveries—open up a variety of strategic paths, reducing reliance on export contracts.
- Enhanced Interaction: With additional rewards, bonuses, and end-game scoring options, player interaction has increased significantly.
- Perfect Information: The new contract refill board provides near-perfect information about future contracts.
- Market Volatility: Farmers markets, milestones, and train deliveries make the market more dynamic, adding excitement and strategy to each decision.
- Intricate Clan Abilities: New clans bring more complex abilities that will challenge even the heavy gamers, offering deeper strategic play.
Ease of Play
To ensure a smooth experience with the expansion, we’ve created several helpful aids:
- Custom lidded inserts and removable trays with engraved icons and an insert guide, for quick setup & teardown, and vertical storage.
- New player aids detailing the expansion’s actions for each player.
- Icon reference sheet on the back of the rule book.
- Step-by-step setup guide for all selected modules.
- Automa player aid cards, minimizing the need to reference the rulebook.
New Clans
The 9 new clans feature major industries in Scotland before and during the Industrial Revolution and historic clans that were associated with these.
Here is an introduction into 4 out of the 9 new clans:
-
Clan Sinclair: Inspired by Robert Sinclair, a pioneering locomotive engineer, this clan reflects Scotland’s railroad expansion.
Clan Ability: The Sinclair clan is uniquely skilled at expanding across the map. They can pay to skip across a land hex (empty or occupied) or cross any amount of loch hexes. The Sinclairs are not great seafarers. They start with river-crossing unlocked, however they cannot upgrade any further. -
Clan Fraser: With deep roots in textile production, Clan Fraser draws upon its history of crafting with wool and operating textile mills.
Clan Ability: Transform wool into kilts—a new, processed good unique to this clan. For every 4 cotton (or multiples thereof) you import, you gain 2 wool, capturing the industrial shift as imported cotton began replacing linen and wool in textile production. -
Clan MacGregor: Known for its roots in agriculture and animal husbandry, Clan MacGregor thrived in the Highlands, where grazing lands supported its strong ties to sheep farming.
Clan Ability: Form herds by placing two or more sheep on adjacent hexes. Sheep in a herd can graze toward empty adjacent grassland hexes gaining you terrain without cost. -
Clan MacPherson: Known for their roots in Badenoch and expertise in animal husbandry, Clan MacPherson excelled in breeding Highland cattle and other livestock.
Clan Ability: At the end of each Production Phase, any adjacent pair of animals of the same type will breed. Note: These young animals won’t produce milk or wool until future rounds.
Our Personal Review and Recommendation
This is my number 1 Game of all Time. I have played this game many times, has excellent re-playability, a very balanced yet asymmetrical factions that play quite differently due to their abilities - though some strategies involved are much harder than others and would be for more experienced players. The constant change of end goals every game causes a dramatic shift in everyone's strategy, which is probably what I like the most about this game. You cannot ignore the round benefits, you must adapt your unique strategy the game presents each play.
Componentry wise the game is a wonderful feel of traditional timber pieces, and old style euro artwork that I absolutely adore and crave. The layout and map gives this feel of exploration, yet settling your clans and reaching distant lands to score or gain benefits. Player interaction is very high in this game, with every play being thoughtful of where your opponent may go, want to go, or what farms have they built that you can interact with. Then there is the market, a dynamic market that adjusts based on who is buying and who is selling what. Think an opponent is about to sell a whole heap of milk, maybe you should sell your milk before they do!
Fantastic best game ever made. You won't regret it, and has remained my number 1 game for several years now. Whilst BGG only rates this game 7.9, I'll would give it a 9! My biggest complaint would be that some of the factions are harder to play and some rules could be a little clearer in certain aspects (requiring a few looks ups on forums for some more intricate scenarios).
Upgrades
Do we have upgrades? For me this games timber pieces hit the spot, theme and feel of the game. And for that I won't be upgrading the pieces. However, the player boards should be dual layered, as one bump on the player board can be disaster. So we do have some premium deluxe transparent acrylic overlays. There are two different sizes as the 3rd printing of Clans of Caledonia has bigger player boards, and the version with Industria. These larger updated sizes will be available soon!
