Whilst it has similarities to Terraforming Mars it plays completely different and we missed out on not getting into this game sooner. It has become one of our most favourite games. Be warned at 4 players it can take considerable time to play, but we have found all players have always thoroughly enjoyed it. Personally I enjoy this game the best at 2 players. It typically rates very high on board game geek and has loads of replay ability. When I teach this game I clearly indicate that sometimes you won't get the cards you want, this is part of the game, and part of the strategy that you should invest into deck hunting. It is a particular strategy that the game pushes and if you accept it you can be rewarded, even if you do manage to get a fairly good hand to begin with investing in deck hunting will likely improve you game score and enjoyment of finding those great combos.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI feel end game scoring is the most unique component to this game that I haven't seen done before. It does create a bit of a race to build that zoo the best you can when time is running out, and sometimes you feel like your zoo is 90 percent complete. This can generate a little frustration that you couldn't quite finish it due to other players triggering end game scoring sooner than you had wished. At end of game there always seems to be positive banter around the table how each could have progressed their goal which really adds to the enthusiasm and positive vibe to this game.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe unique scoring mechanism is something to boast about in this game. The end game round triggers when your zoo appeal counter (ticket price), passes over your conservation counter, but your zoo appeal counter starts at the opposite end of the track to your conservation counter with both counters progressing towards each other. You are continually watching other players progressing one of their counters, which makes you think am I getting left behind on my current strategy? Do I need to invest more in Conservation points or Zoo Appeal? i.e. If I get my Panda's I'll push up my conservation points, but they cost so much, instead should I build out my petting zoo to boost my zoo appeal or upgrade my cards to improve my engine?\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eWe will never see this game leave our board game shelf and I'm always up for a game of Ark Nova if someone asks. Each time new horde cards are drawn, everyone is in anticipation of where they are coming from, and what will they be! Then there is discussion around the table on the best strategy to survive, meanwhile whilst your scheming in how you can lead in honour points. At its heart its a work placement game but it's added some unique and interesting mechanics that work so well in this semi coop game. We've had some interesting game plays with this game, games with over 200 points with only a few points between all players, to games where there is a 80 point lead, and games where we've all lost and no one is a winner (yes we were all greedy to get the most honour and failed miserably with catapults smashing our wall). The game has asymmetrical powers, and my only negative on this game is I find some combinations of certain powers between players can be a little unbalanced. This could be easily fixed in the way Scythe bans certain player combination types in a game. If I get around to it I might even create my own list. That said the theming in this game is just next level, everything you do makes sense, horses can't attack pike men because they don't fit on the card properly but can penetrate through the hoards potentially taking out that catapult on the edge of the board, your arches can't get the spoils from the hoard (because they are on the wall), and the shield bearers will make your archers almost useless. The balance between an engine build, and attacking for honour, or just the embarrassment when you are shamed because you were the only one that took that action (must be stupid action then eh?).\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eAbsolutely love this game, especially with 3 or more players. I also love the investors mechanic on this, and the gamble to ensure you get through the mountains. If you don't those contracts were a waste of time! Awaken Realms has done a tremendous job at polishing every aspect of this game. If you have never played Castles of Burgundy, it is one of the highest ranking games. Rolling dice and then attempting to use them to your best ability regardless of the value to build out your duchy provides some crunchy decision making, but still allows the game to flow well. There is so much content in this edition of the game with many expansions,  of those we have only played a few so far. This game plays well in both 2 players and high player counts.
